American Heritage Magazine began as a soft-cover quarterly pamphlet called "American Heritage: A Journal of Community History" for the members of the American Association for State and Local History in 1947. Between 1949 and 1954 it became "American Heritage." In mid 1954 the editor, along with other members of the AASLH, acquired the title from the Association and launched a new hard-cover series.
